National Public Lands Day ~ Outdoor Skills Clinics

Presenter(s):
Description:
The Canyon Lakes Ranger District is hosting its first National Public Lands Day (NPLD), on Saturday, September 25 at the Redfeather Ranger Station, near Red Feather Lakes, and you are invited to help us celebrate! Our goal for this event is to try and bring our local community together for a fun and educational hands-on event that will teach you some useful skills, and give you a chance to work alongside natural resource agency professionals. The first 200 registrants will receive a FREE federal parks pass, good for one carload for one visit. You’re also invited to stay for a catered dinner on us afterwards. Outdoor Skills Mini-Sessions You can participate in a fun and educational series of round robin mini-sessions lasting from 9 AM to 3 PM. We’ll keep you interested and moving with this set of one hour mini-workshops that will give you a chance to work alongside natural resource professionals, learn some new outdoor skills and get your hands a little dirty with service projects. During the event you’ll have a chance to participate in: > Map-and-compass navigational skill basics (or what to do when your GPS battery dies!) taught by experienced Forest Service fire fighters. > Wildlife track and scat ID with the Colorado Division of Wildlife > Leave No Trace basics taught by master LNT trainers > The district’s first tree revegetation project to replace trees killed by the pine beetle epidemic. You’ll also learn a lot about pine beetle ecology. Forest Service silvaculturists will team-teach this event > Trail restoration project. Join the Forest Service trails manager as we “put to bed” a social trail that is greatly impacting soils. Registration for the entire set of mini-sessions is required at www.volunteeroutdoors.net. We are expecting up to 250 participants for this event. Youths age 12 and up are welcome to participate with a parent or guardian. The event runs from 9:00- 3:30. Dinner is at 4:30 PM. Please contact Kristy Wumkes at 295-6721 or kwumkes@fs.fed.us if you have any questions. See you there!
