CAMPBELL VALLEY RESTORATION – VOLUNTEERS NEEDED

Presenter(s):
Description:
Volunteers are an integral part of the solution to the ecological disaster at Campbell Valley. Volunteers will be planting willows and other native shrubs to restore streamside habitat and heal eroding gullies helping to protect water quality and improve wildlife habitat. This project will also improve habitat for the federally threatened Preble’s Meadow Jumping Mouse. Join dozens of volunteers on May 23 to help with the first community-based restoration effort in Campbell Valley. Free food and drinks will be provided. No experience is necessary. To sign up, or for more information, send an e-mail to info@wlrv.org, call 303-543-1411, or sign-up on-line at www.wlrv.org. # of VOLUNTEERS NEEDED: 70 REGISTRATION INFORMATION: website: www.wlrv.org or e-mail: info@wlrv.org or call 303-543-1411 TYPE OF PROJECT: Planting and gully stabilization Managed by The Nature Conservancy, the beautiful Robert’s Ranch Conservation Easement is at the heart of the Laramie Foothills Conservation Area, one of 12 priority conservation landscapes identified by TNC in Colorado. A catastrophic breach of the North Poudre Irrigation Canal in 1905, followed by continual leakage, has lead to significant erosion in the valley. The main stem of the valley has down cut more than 30 feet deep, and over 500 feet wide in many areas, leading to the loss of well over 4.5 million cubic yards of soil over the past century. This soil has ended up in our local water ways just north of Fort Collins. Likewise, an important foothills streamside habitat has been lost: the lush native shrub and tree community along Campbell creek, which would otherwise support a multitude of migratory birds and other native foothills wildlife. Come help be part of the solution.
