Teaching with Technology Workshop: “The (Recording) Pen is Mightier Than….”

Presenter(s):
Alexander Hulpke, Department of Mathematics
Description:
Calculus has a strong procedural component -- students need to be able to actually work problems. Students with weaker algebra skills often struggle because of the reliance on basic algebra and would like to see more calculations, or at least all details of every example, at a pace convenient for them. Doing so in a class is not only infeasible, but also not a good use of limited class time. A solution to these demands without sacrificing other content is by making “worked out problems” available in video format on the web. As the writing and accompanying audio comments are the only essential components, the video portion can simply be the `”board'' with writing appearing on it. After some attempts with a smartboard and a pen tablet, hear how one department is now using a recording pen as a tool. This presentation will cover how they create, edit content, and distribute the actual videos.
