Summative and Formative Grading in the Sciences Presented by Albert Lionelle
College of Natural Sciences Master Teaching Initiative LUNCHEON AND LECTURE

Presenter(s):
Albert Lionelle
Description:
INSPIRED BY JOE FELDMAN’S “GRADING FOR EQUITY,” FACULTY IN THE DEPARTMENT OF COMPUTER SCIENCE HAVE RECENTLY BEEN MAKING USE OF BOTH FORMATIVE AND SUMMATIVE ASSIGNMENTS AND ALLOTTING A SIGNIFICANT PROPORTION OF THE COURSE GRADE TO ASSIGNMENTS WITH UNLIMITED ATTEMPTS (EVEN ON EXAMS). THIS APPROACH RECOGNIZES STUDENT POTENTIAL (RATHER THAN FOCUSING ON PRIOR PREPARATION) AND THEIR ABILITY TO “CATCH UP” THROUGHOUT THE SEMESTER AS THEY SEEK TO DEMONSTRATE COMPETENCY. THIS MTI WORKSHOP WILL DISCUSS THE EXPERIENCE AND OUTCOMES OF THE IMPLEMENTATIONS AND WILL INCLUDE A DISCUSSION OF HOW GRADING WAS ACCOMPLISHED USING THE CURRENT TOOLS AND SYSTEMS AT CSU WHILE ALSO MAINTAINING CONSISTENCY AND RIGOROUS ACADEMIC STANDARDS.
