Students' Free Speech: Practical Tips for CLA Instructors from the Public Speaking Classroom

Presenter(s):
Dr. Tom Dunn
Description:
The First Amendment is one of the most sacred protections afforded by the U.S. Constitution; and yet, it is also one of the most challenging terrains we step on as instructors in the college classroom. In recent years, college GTAs, instructors, and faculty have expressed trepidation about how they engage questions of free speech with our students. This CLA Lunch and Workshop seeks to help minimize some of these anxieties while providing tips for a more “free” classroom environment as it relates to speech.

In this CLA MTI Lunch and Workshop, Dr. Tom Dunn, Associate Professor of Communication Studies and Director of SPCM 200: Public Speaking, will offer practical tips on teaching in the college classroom with students' freedom of speech in mind. Drawing on over ten years of experience teaching Public Speaking and eight years of experience supervising the Public Speaking class at CSU, Dr. Dunn offers several teaching tactics that address key concerns on this topic and provides an opportunity for Q&A. While other offices and events on campus offer legal expertise, administrative advice, or research-based insights on free speech to college faculty, this presentation and luncheon is focused on practical advice and teaching effectiveness based in real world classroom experiences. These lessons can be applied in almost any CLA class.

In particular, this workshop will engage issues like:
• Who benefits when we protect student’s right to free speech?
• How do I set classroom expectations with students about free speech?
• How can I invite students to speak freely in my class?
• How can I help students learn how to use free speech responsibly?
• When should instructors respond to student speech (and when shouldn’t they)?
• What are appropriate and productive ways for responding to student speech?
• How do I manage conflicts between student speech and class assignments?
• How do I manage other students’ responses to student speech?

While this session will be focused on students’ freedom of speech in the college classroom, we will offer another session on instructors’ freedom of speech in the college classroom later in the semester.
