Navigating Fair Use: Remix, Appropriation, Attribution

Presenter(s):
Tim Amidon, Department of English
Description:
Copyright has a powerful impact on how research and teaching is enacted within college settings. One hears whispers about uploading only 1/8th of a text as a course reading in a dark hallway; an instructor rigidly enforces the slightest instance of textual appropriation, yet allows students to “use” pictures and music without attribution; a student proclaims that she might remix videos at will (because it’s for school and that’s fair use). This workshop aims to dispel the mythos that often surrounds copyright by equipping instructors with a set of resources and strategies that will help them navigate their rights and responsibilities. In specific, we will examine the four factors of fair use doctrine and practice applying it to potential scenarios that instructors might face in the classroom.
