Is Culture important in STEM?
Presenter(s):
Ernie Chavez
Description:
In the 17th century, Francis Bacon described culture as "the body of knowledge and manners acquired by an individual." Later. culture was described by sociological theory as "the shared customs, values and beliefs which characterize a given social group." Education at all levels is as Goodland and McMannon describe it, "... a process of socialization, preparing each individual to take an active place in the specific society in which he or she lives." Science, engineering, and mathematics teach content but they also socialize and "acculturate" the individual into a way of thinking and a way of perceiving the world. How do these cultural experiences interrelate and what is the instructor’s role and responsibility in this process?
