Critical Thinking in Content Writing: Write-to-Learn strategies for the large classroom

Presenter(s):
Natalie Barnes, Department of Art, 2012/2013 TILT Writing Research Fellow, Writing Across the Curriculum
Description:
Instructors teaching gtPathways classes are faced with the responsibility for not only teaching content, but to integrate meaningful writing assignments that are a significant percentage of the final student grade. This is a demanding enough task for trained composition professionals; it is an incredibly daunting challenge for content instructors. This workshop will focus on rubric development for write-to-learn and write-to-engage strategies with a two-fold design: 1) encouraged critical thinking responses from the students and 2) make the task not only less time intensive, but also more interesting for the teacher. An introduction to the issue will be followed by hands-on participation where you’ll work on developing your own writing assignments and grading rubrics.
