Rubrics: What's Communication Got to Do with It?

Presenter(s):
Tonya Buchan
Description:
Are students producing work that meets your expectations? Do some students miss the point of an assignment and turn in something different? Are they baffled by their grade? If so, they may be unclear of your expectations and a rubric may be the solution. Rubrics are a tool to communicate and measure pre-defined grading criteria. Developing a rubric and sharing it with students ahead of time can result in student work better aligned with the assignment criteria and make the feedback process less subjective, especially if TAs are grading assignments. You will leave the workshop with sample rubrics and start one of your own. Be sure to bring a sample assignment to work on.
