Improving Student Success with Transparent Assignment Design: TILTing at TILT

Description:
TILT is an acronym for transparency in learning and teaching that implies the small size of the effort required to adopt it. TILT involves reciprocal communication among teachers and students about the methods of teaching and learning. As few as two TILTed assignments in a course can benefit students' success by increasing students' sense of belonging, confidence, persistence, awareness of skill development and workplace readiness (Winkelmeset al., 2016; Calkins and Winkelmes 2018, Winkelmes et al. 2019). This highly interactive workshop introduces faculty and staff to TILT and the data that demonstrates how a small change to existing practice can increase student success and teaching satisfaction. Participants in this workshop will: -gain familiarity with the research on TILT and how it works -practice applying the TILT Framework to sample assignments provided from TILT research studies -explore strategies and tools to implement TILT in assignment prompts, advising protocols, and student-facing materials -revise an assignment prompt of their own to make it more transparent, relevant, and accessible for their students TEF: Instructional Strategies
